Country Name: Canada
Human Name: Matthew Williams
Gender: Male
Appearance: Matthew is a young man, only 19 years of age, with pale skin and shining amethyst eyes. His chin length hair is wavy with a slight orange gradient that travels from root to tip and is more concentrated at the tips. His voice is soft and is easily carried away by the gusting cold winds of his homeland. He does not need his voice however, as he seldom meets anyone he could relate to now. Upon his feet are boots for which he is glad for as they help him trek across the vast lands of ice and snow. He covers his sleek and muscular frame with a tan jacket, trimmed with fur on the hood and he is thankful that it still keeps out the chilling wind.
On his back he carries a knapsack that he managed to fill when he realized that he had survived the massive ice storm that had destroyed his home. It contains necessities such as dried fruits and meats he had stored previously, a blanket, a canteen filled with water, and bullets, lots of bullets used for hunting and protection. Oh, and don’t forget about the bottle of maple syrup buried underneath all those bullets. Hanging from his shoulder is a rifle that he managed to grab from his destroyed display case before he left. It was the only one still working out of the few he had. On his other side is his companion and closest friend, the small white polar bear Kumajirou. They hunt together and protect one another from the wild beasts that they come upon now and then but most of all, they are each other’s driving force to live and survive in the constantly cold harsh climate they live in.
Personality: Matthew is kind, gentle, and shy. His shyness is reflected in the softness of his voice and the fact that his brother can talk for both of them if given the time. It is this trait that has lead to the creation of his invisibility complex, which causes others to forget about his very existence. But being the kind nation he is, he always forgives even though he constantly has to proclaim who he is. He can be an extreme pushover sometimes, usually when he is addressed by someone. He gets so flustered over the fact that he is noticed that he will follow along with whatever the other is doing.
He seldom gets angry but when he does, he releases his passive aggressive anger which could result in a long winded and drawn out speech about the imperfections of the person who offended him. His shining moment was reducing his brother to a crying mess after three hours of pointing out his flaws. Being passive aggressive, most of the time he cannot express his anger or frustration in situations presented to him and thus makes him come off as a pushover (even though he is).
Although, he hates fighting, he is not weak and can fight back if he wanted. He is strong and was a force to reckon with in both world wars. He does not flaunt his strength though, and at first glance most would assume that he is frail judging only by his skinny frame. Only those who have been his opponents know of the vicious beast hidden behind his kind and gentle eyes.
He still is open to all cultures and people. Before all hell broke loose in world, he welcomed all incomers with open arms to his land and still would if the world hadn’t been destroyed. Being the biggest maple product producer in the world, he has very large sweet tooth and will consume just about anything made of maple, even going so far to put it in his coffee. He also has a soft spot for ice cream and is willing to share with anyone who asks.
Likes: Maple syrup (anything maple actually), pancakes, Kumajirou, being recognized for who he is and not his brother, ice cream, nature, the aurora borealis.
Dislikes: Fighting, his brother trying to sell him weird things, being called his brother, being alone, his invisibility powers.
Strengths: His amazing ability to snipe things from a distance such as enemies or potential food sources, his invisibility powers, his respect for nature and in knowing what native plants still are safe to eat and which to avoid, his ability to tap into his reserved strength and power.
Weaknesses: His power of becoming invisible to almost everyone, his ability to be an extreme pushover at times and anything maple such as ice cream, syrup, candy, etc
Fears: Being forgotten, being alone, losing everything he holds dear to his heart such as his obnoxious but loveable brother.
What happened before and shortly after the apocalypse?: Matthew spent the majority of his day sitting in his house in front of a nicely burning fire in his fireplace. He had been sitting out a particularly nasty blizzard that had blocked all communications in and out of his home and the surrounding area. Electricity had been cut the day before and with only the light of the burning fireplace, he sat in his comfy chair with Kumajirou curled up by his feet. With no one to tell him otherwise, Matthew thought that the blizzard would pass over and everything would return to normal. With this mindset, he slowly drifted off to sleep.
In the early hours of the next day, the winds outside began to howl loudly, screeching and shaking his small shack of a house. Startled by the noise, he shook himself awake and looked around. The fire had gone out hours ago and all that was left were the smoldering ashes of the logs. He looked down and noticed Kumajirou staring up at him, the bear’s beady black eyes shining in the darkness. Matthew reached down and picked up the animal up just as a loud cracking sound echoed through his house. Realizing that the sound was coming from above him, he scrambled out of his chair just as the roof collapsed along with the walls of his cabin. In fear of his life and that of his bear, Matthew threw his body over Kumajirou and shielded his face with his arms hoping that he wouldn’t be crushed by the large wooden beams.
Once the falling timber and other housing materials had ceased, he slowly sat up and surveyed his surroundings. All he saw was white for miles on end. Everything was gone, the trees, the road, even the houses he used to be able to see in the distance. It was all gone. He wanted to cry, to scream, to ask why this tragedy had happened but he did nothing of the sort.
In the eerie silence as snow drifted down from the grey heavens above, Matthew picked himself up from the ground and tried to recover anything that would help him now in this demolished world. He was lucky. One of his rifles survived the cave in along with boxes of bullets and dried food he had stored in the cupboards of his kitchen. In the area that was once his closet, he found a working backpack and filled it to the top with his newly found goods.
With one last look at the mound that used to be his home, Matthew began to walk, Kumajirou following closely behind him with a soft padding of his paws.
What are your character's top priorities and goals?
1) Find his brother
2) Find out what’s going on in the rest of the world
3) Find someone who could help him accomplish 1 and 2
4) Restore the world to what it once was
5) Keep walking and never lose hope that everything will turn out alright in the end
Sample Post: He had been walking for days on end across the vast plains of ice and snow. There was nothing to hint about the direction in which he was traveling and even he, the embodiment of the nation of Canada, couldn’t figure it out. He guessed it had something to do with his disorientation brought on by the endless, monotonous white color that surrounded him. His body ached with the collective pain of his people as they continued to brave the cold Canadian winter that had settled after the storm to end all storms had past. He also contributed his disorientation to this constant, searing pain that coursed through his veins.
Weary from walking, he plopped on to the snowy ground, sending up flakes of snow only to have it fall back on to him. He knew he was running out of food and had been rationing what he had left. He had to find something to eat soon or else run the risk starving. He hadn’t seen any animals since he left the conifer forest a week prior and even then, he wasn’t prepared to shoot the creature let alone be able to eat it.
Tired and hungry, he fell to his back and closed his eyes, wishing that everything would go back to normal. He wanted to be home and in front of his fireplace, he wanted his brother and friends, but most of all, he wanted the pain to stop. It ran through his body in continuous waves, constantly reminding him of the ruin his country was in and the suffering of his people. He wanted to help them but there was nothing he could do, at least not for now. All he could do was hope that he would be able to come into contact with anyone from the outside world and see if they could offer any help at all.
Suddenly, he stood up, a new vigor in his eyes at the thought of waiting for help. “No, my people need me. I need to be strong, for them, for the future, for Canada.”
