Character Information
Country Name: Portugal
Human Name: Afonso Miguel Carriedo
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Personality: Very much like his brother, Spain, Portugal is a very cheerful nation. He'll rarely be seen without some sort of smile on his face, whether it's a large grin or a gentle curve of his lips. He takes delight in simple things, and is not really one for the grand world of new technology. He prefers writing letters over sending emails, and going outside to soak in the sun rather than staying home to watch TV. Understandably, that also means that Portugal is not very good with technology, but this is something that he takes in stride. He isn't ashamed, and usually laughs off whatever jab is made at his lack of tech savviness.
Overall, at first sight, Portugal will seem like a very agreeable and kind nation. And, well, he is - most of the time, at least. For all his gentleness and bright demeanor, Portugal is actually very easy to anger. Though he has a fair amount of tolerance for criticisms and threats aimed at him, he will quickly snap at whoever dares talk poorly about those he truly cares about. Although Portugal isn't the loud type of angry person, his temper is not to be underestimated.
Portugal often finds himself reminiscing about the old days, when he was the formidable Portuguese Empire. He misses the days when he used to navigate and monopolize the seas, even if those days were quite hectic and full of fighting. He also misses all the old friendships he used to have, because a majority of them seemed to fade with time. His relationship with his brother is admittedly not as great as it was when Spain was a young child, and he feels as if he has been replaced with others in the lives of some of his former best friends. This leads to some hatred and bitterness that he tries his best to keep hidden.
Though it doesn't really seem like it, Portugal is quite the clingy person. Once he becomes close to someone, or decides that he likes someone, he'll be hardpressed to let that person go. He's already drifted away from some of his friends, and he doesn't like feeling alone. He'll try to woo people back to him with poetry and sweet music, because these are some of the things that he knows he's good at. Admittedly, this also leads to him falling in love quite easily, which often sets him up for heartbreak. He's well aware of this tendency, but isn't really able to stop it.
Likes: Poetry, exploring, sunlight/warmth, sleep, attention, music, wine, cooking
Dislikes: Being forgotten, cold, being forced to stay in one place for too long, bitter and bland food
Strengths: Sailing, getting along with others, and exploring.
Weaknesses: Snow, technology, children.
Fears: Being abandoned/alone, being hated, and deserts.
What happened before and shortly after the apocalypse?: Portugal wasn't doing anything spectacular, when the apocalypse happened. In fact, he'd just been cooking some treats to send to his brother and England when the earthquake struck. It was so sudden - and rare - that both him and his people weren't prepared for it at all. Buildings swayed and collapsed, taking thousands of people with them. The seas roared angrily, at the edges of the country while wildfires burned the deeper parts of the land. All in all, it looked like the apocalypse that people had been expecting of 2012.
Fortunately, Portugal survived the natural onslaught, though he lost his home and many of his possessions during the disaster. However, he was not without injury; aside from some flesh wounds, he received a broken hand and a scratch to his eye, rendering him half blind in one eye. Still, he preservered, because his people preservered, and it was his duty as a nation to help them. He did what he could to help the Portuguese men and women around him, all the while slowly inching towards Spain. He was worried about his brother, after all, and needed to see if he was alright.
What are your character's top priorities and goals? To make sure his friends and Spain are alright, and then begin rebuilding. Portugal sees this as a new beginning of sorts, so he will treat it like one.
Sample Post: "Para ser grande, sê inteiro: nada... teu exagera ou exclui."
Ashes, ashes, and more ashes. Had anyone been around to ask, Portugal would insist that the tears that were falling from his eyes were because of the smoke that still arose from the charred ground that stretched on for miles. In truth, though, it was completely different. He was scared for himself, for his friends, for his brother, and for his people. He cried because he didn't want to see any more of this death, and because he couldn't stand being alone. He cried for his people, alive, dying, and dead, and tried his best to ignore the burnt remains of their bodies and memories as he walked on by. He cried as a goodbye to his old life.
"Sê todo em cada coisa. Põe quanto és no mínimo que fazes..."
This couldn't have happened, and he couldn't have survived, without God's mercy. Certainly, this was all part of His plan. This was all a new beginning, and Portugal was willing to accept that. But first, before he can fully move on and settle, he wanted to mourn for the life that just ended. He wanted to mourn for all his achievements, forgotten and buried in the ashes of time, and for all the great people of his past, who had worked so hard to build him up into a grand empire.
But he was confident that, once the mourning period ended, everything will be fine again. After all, he'd survived thus far. If he survived and thrived once, he could very well do it again. If empires weren't to be the ladder up in this era, then so be it; he'd simply become whatever it was that offered salvation for himself and his people.
Until then, however; until his lands remained scorched and his people scattered and lost, he would cry.
"Assim em cada lago a lua toda brilha, porque alta vive."
(Poem is Para Ser Grande by Fernando Pessoa)
