Character Information
Country Name: Kongeriket Noreg/Norge – Kingdom of Norway
Human Name: Håkon Sverre Jorsal
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Personality: Håkon can be described using three words: cautious, practical and purposeful. When he’s making an important decision in life, decisions about things that are vital to his security and the welfare of those he loves, he can spend a very long time on them. It’s not to be difficult or annoying; he merely wants those decisions to be rock solid. Once his mind is made up, however, he has an amazing persistence and will follow through. Håkon rarely gives up on a task when he has decided on it. And he will stick to his guns, even if he is being ridiculed, provoked or tempted (which is rather often).
Sometimes, his ability to hang in there can turn into pride and obstinacy. At other times he will refuse to accept another opinion or suggestion, even if the advice is reasonable and the person offering it has nothing but good intentions. The reason to why he holds on to his position or opinion is his fear of change. Norway gained his independence in 1905 by keeping his face hard and his decisions harder, and he believes he will appear an easy target if he wavers. People trying to meddle in his affairs, question his ability to see things through to the end or change the rules of the game, are very likely to hear from him.
Even worse are those who try to push something onto him. After so many years of suppression, he needs room to control his destiny. On the other side of the coin, Håkon also likes to take it easy. Actually, simplicity is what appeals to him. He can’t stand pompousness and look-at-me behaviour. He knows that beauty is not about what you wear or what hairstyle you have. Patience is one of his virtues, and he is prepared to wait as long as it takes for the right moment to act and seize the opportunity when it wanders anywhere near him.
Getting his hands dirty isn’t something Håkon is afraid of. Gardening, practical hobbies and odd jobs around the home is something he prefers. Hard work doesn’t scare him, and he enjoys the feeling of being useful. He trusts his own intuition about others – and he is usually right. Håkon holds a firm belief of the old faith, and is constantly surrounded by a fairy or two. (Referred to as elves in Norwegian lore). He is also able to call forth a troll at his whim. However, he and Arthur are of yet the only who are able to see these supernatural creatures. (Harrdiharr)
Likes: + Iceland. His brother is among the very few he shares dreams and hopes with. + The ocean. Few know the ocean like he does. England cherishes it as one would an old friend, Netherlands respects it as one would a patron, but only Norway really knows it. + The Harding fiddle. Ever since the 1800-century he has adored the Norwegian variant of the violin, and it is among his most prized possessions. + Trolls and elves. Enough said. + Solitude. Though very little of it, Håkon prefers to be left in peace either with his brother or a good book. + Snow. Nothing can compare to the sight of falling or untouched snow. + Coffee. Though he won't say no to a cup of tea, coffee is definitely his favourite drink. + Winter Olympics/Championships. Because he simply is unbeatable in Cross-country skiing. + England. Though he is not as fond of England as he is of Iceland, Håkon finds common ground with Arthur. Tea, their love for the ocean, literature, and namely their shared hatred of those damned non-believers. + Denmark
Dislikes: - Nosiness/loudness. Mostly caused by a certain Denmark and/or his obnoxious friends. - Rudeness + Ignorance. No America, Norway is not the capital of Sweden. - Heat. Anything above 25 degrees (77 F) is just plain uncomfortable. - Being told what to do. Håkon is his own lord and master, no one can tell him what to do. Well, except maybe for his boss, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. - EU. He will snort and scowl if the topic of why Norway isn’t part of the EU appears. - Hungary. The next he catches a glance from her while he is in the midst of an argument with Denmark, he will strongly consider walking up to her and explain that any sexual tension she is seeing is completely one-sided. - Football. It’s just the world’s most idiotic game ever. - People taking his hat. Or making fun of his barrette. Seriously, how hard can it be to just leave them alone?
Strengths: + His magic, trolls and elves. Did someone mention Dovregubben?(No, not the train!) + Patience. Thanks to Denmark, Håkon has achieved a very high patience level. + Music. Not useful in battle or war, but the best way of relaxing + Keeping his emotions in check. Contrary to certain rumours, Håkon does have emotions; he just isn’t ruled by them. He does laugh and does smile, quite regularly even, and any word otherwise is just Germany trying to make himself feel better. + Sailing. As a former Viking, Håkon knows how to sail using the stars and skies for navigation. + Linguistic. Having lived such a long time has made Håkon good with languages. The current languages he has mastered are: Norwegian, Icelandic, German, English, Danish and Swedish.
Weaknesses: - Alcohol. Do not take this the wrong way, he isn’t by any chance an alcoholic, it is just that his tolerance level for alcohol is very low. Sure, a glass of cognac, whiskey or red wine is fine... anything beyond that point, and the result may not be pretty. - Military Forces. Norway isn’t a very militaristic nation, with 23.000 personnel he is forced to rely on America through NATO if another war breaks out. - Reclusive. Håkon isn’t a nation that is noted for his random outbursts or obnoxiousness, he leaves that to Denmark. Instead of participating in arguments involving other nations, Håkon is happy to retreat for himself to worry about his own business - His hair curl. Try pulling it. He dares you.
Fears: ~ Unions. Oh yes, it seemed like a very good idea when the Dane suggested the Scandinavians make a union. Håkon did not expect, however, to be under Danish and Swedish rule for almost five hundred years. ~ Not finding his friends. Ever since the calamity hit, the contact he has had with his fellow Nordics have been very limited. He is beginning to fear for their safety, though not as much as he fears being the only Nordic left. ~ Losing Iceland. Losing his brother would be like losing a part of himself. ~ Denmark leaving him.
What happened before and shortly after the apocalypse?: Norway had felt something brewing ever since the first harsh winter. Snow fell as early as October and didn’t melt until April. The springs felt chillier, his summers cold, and autumn never came. It sort of skipped autumn and became winter instead. His glaciers – which had steadily melted – had suddenly hit a growth spurt and gained over 75m during the winter season. Norway recognised the signs; this was exactly what had happened in the early stages of the Little Ice Age.
2012 passed without much fuss from Norway’s part. He had been summoned to a meeting in Bergen with his expert meteorologists and geologists, trying to find a solution to the sudden cold (and the increasing electricity-use from his people) when an earthquake hit his coast. He learned later that it wasn’t an earthquake, it was in fact the aftershock of the earthquake which hit England. As one of the safest countries in the world, this unusually strong natural disaster made his people alert – especially once they learned what had happened just across the pond.
Over the next few days, Norway expected the worst. The sea claiming him, a storm swallowing him, the earth destroying him... the news from Sweden were enough to put him on the edge. Sleeping became difficult and he became jumpy, expecting bad news around each corner. But nothing happened... just the biting cold which was now beginning to claim lives in Finnmark, Troms, Nordland, South- and North Trøndelag. Svalbard were deserted a long time ago, the citizens evacuated once the temperature dropped below -30C (-22F).
As the cold crept along his land, Norway realised he was not one of the lucky to receive a quick death. He was destined to suffer with his people until the cold eventually would claim his life too. The paleoclimatologists said something about a storm moving from the North Pole and down the Norwegian Sea, but his mind couldn’t process the information. The Day After Tomorrow played before his inner eye.
The storm passed, but not without damage. Electricity failed early, lakes and fjords and harbours froze, making it impossible to communicate and to send supplies for those who needed it. The Norwegians who braved the storm was soon lost in the never-ending raging blizzard, never to be seen again. Families, now too dependent on isolation and heating, froze to death in their homes as they ran out of wood and their windows cracked in the cold.
Norway was like a giant uninhabitable glacier; deserted cities half buried in snow looked more like ghost towns than beacons of light. What should he do? What could he do? The only thing any self-respecting Norwegian could do: strap on a pair of skis, get the Harding Fiddle and head out. There was nothing left for Håkon here anyway... and he had to check on Iceland. He had to make absolutely sure his brother was okay before he did anything else.
What are your character's top priorities and goals? The top priority: Find Iceland no matter what. Though Norway is perfectly able to survive on his own, he fears greatly for his brother’s safety. (The thought of Iceland managing without his aid will never cross his mind once he has entered his onii-chan mode.) His second priority would be to find Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Sure, they’ve had their scuffles and quarrels throughout history, but now is not the time to go all Viking again. He believes they need to make an agreement (Not a union. Never a union) where they agree to not only help each other in case others tries to go Viking on them, but also let their people freely cross their borders to find shelter and aid. Once Norway knows his friends are safe and sound, his third priority would be to explore the world (again). Who knows which country still lives, and which country is up for grabs?

Did you read the rules? Hmm? Siden når ble lille Engla Land utrolig? Vel, eg må kanskje innrømma at din rolle her i verden har fått en mye større betydning (bare synd at du ikkje klare å håndtera yngre nasjoner) nå enn før, og eg antar at din te smak er bedre enn andres. Men å kalla deg for utrolig? Nei, eg tror ikkje eg vil gå så langt… eg ser på deg ennå som den lille nasjonen me la ut for å plaga.
Hmm? Since when did little Engla Land become amazing? Well, I do have to admit your part in this world have escalated greatly as of lately (just too bad about your ability to handle younger nations), and I do presume your taste in tea is better compared to others. But to call you amazing? No, I do not think I would go that far… I still see you as the little nation we set out to pester. *Fails to hide a small smile*
Favorite Pairing: DenNor is my favourite, but NorIce comes pretty close too :3 Other pairings I like… SwitzerlandxAustria, SwitzerlandxNorway, EnglandxFrance, The North American Family… and… PrussiaxPrussia? I dunno –A-
